I had heard about geocaching some years ago when a friend (kiwi living in the UK) got into it. Not having a sat nav (& why would you want one in NZ!!!) we weren't able to try it although it sounded fun.
So what's geocaching?? I hear some of you cry. Well you use a Sat Nav to help you find hidden items. They are hidden all over the world, not just in New Zealand. It's like a treasure hunt kinda thing. You sign the log to say you have found it and log it on the internet site too. Some of them have trinkets inside and the rule is if you take something you put something in of equal or greater value.
They also have travel bugs/geo coins which are trackable devices that people have released. If you find one you fill in the log to say you have it and then move it along to another cache. Some have missions so you have to bear this in mind.
Hey, we enjoy it, it gets us out in the fresh air, we do it as a family (mostly), it lets you find some places you didn't even know existed, and it's free.
Check out http://www.geocaching.com/ for more info.
we will be putting piccies of some of the caches (not all!!!) we have done and they maybe spoilers - you have been warned!
